Jan Korinek

Jan Kořínek is a Czech pianist, Hammond organist, producer, educator and bandleader. Over the past twenty-five years he has performed throughout Europe with artists from the blues, soul, jazz, funk, Americana and roots music scenes. Alongside his work as a performer, he produces recordings, leads his own projects and works as a private music coach and ensemble mentor, specialising in groove, improvisation, stylistic interpretation and musical interaction.

Jan Korinek and Groove

1999-present Founded in 1999, Jan Kořínek & Groove is a soul-jazz project built around the sound of the Hammond organ. Drawing on blues, soul and jazz traditions, the band combines original music with a repertoire inspired by the classic organ groups of the 1950s and 1960s. The current lineup features Osian Roberts, Jiří Maršíček and Oliver Lipenský.

Jan Kořínek collaborates with legendary British trombonist and vocalist Ashley Slater (Freak Power, Carla Bley, Fatboy Slim projects) in the Ashley Slater Heptet, combining groove-oriented jazz, funk, soul, and Hammond organ traditions. In May 2026, the ensemble released a new record featuring original music and contemporary brass-driven arrangements.

Freak Power is the acclaimed British acid-jazz and funk collective founded by Ashley Slater and Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim). Known for its energetic blend of funk, soul, jazz and dance music, the band remains one of the most distinctive projects to emerge from the UK groove scene. Since 2024, Jan Kořínek has performed with Freak Power as Hammond organist and keyboard player.

From Louis Armstrong to The Beatles. Jan Kořínek’s solo piano programme traces the development of popular music through the songs and artists that shaped it. The repertoire includes music associated with Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, James Taylor, The Beatles and many others. Suitable for concert venues, receptions, private events and corporate functions, the programme combines familiar songs with a personal approach rooted in jazz, blues, gospel and early rock’n’roll traditions.

Since 2022, Jan Kořínek and acclaimed American vocalist Carole Alston have presented Gospel Meets The Blues, an intimate project exploring the deep connections between gospel, blues, soul, and spiritual music. Featuring powerful vocals and Hammond organ, the duo combines traditional repertoire with personal interpretations rooted in African-American musical traditions. The project is also available as a trio with drums (Marcus Jurkovic/Jochen Reidinger).

Built on years of collaboration, the project combines expressive guitar playing, piano, and vocals in an intimate format that highlights musical interaction and improvisation. Their repertoire ranges from blues and soul classics to original material.

Biography

Jan Kořínek is a Czech pianist, Hammond organist, producer, educator, composer and bandleader whose work spans blues, soul, jazz, funk, Americana and roots music. Born into a musical family, he was introduced to music at an early age by his father, pianist Miroslav Kořínek. Over the years he established himself as one of the most active Hammond organ players on the Central European music scene. Throughout his career he has collaborated with a wide range of Czech and international artists, including Miro Žbirka, Chris Cain, Sugaray Rayford, Ashley Slater, Freak Power, Carlos Johnson, Chanda Rule, Johnny Rawls, Sharon Lewis, Trudy Lynn, D.K. Harrell, Luca Giordano, Steve Walsh, Rene Trossman, Wabi Daněk, Druhá tráva, November 2nd, Neřež, Krausberry, Groovekeepers, The Blues Generation and Sugarfoot. For more than a decade he recorded and toured with Slovak pop icon Miro Žbirka, appearing on several studio albums and live projects. He has also shared stages and recording sessions with leading figures of the international blues scene, including Chris Cain, Carlos Johnson and Sugaray Rayford, while developing long-term collaborations with artists such as Chanda Rule, Lorenzo Thompson and Sharon Lewis. As a producer and recording musician, Kořínek has contributed to numerous albums and international recording projects. He is also the founder of Jan Kořínek & Groove and the former Jan Kořínek Soultet, projects that reflect his long-standing interest in Hammond organ traditions, soul-jazz, funk and groove-oriented music. Alongside performing and recording, he remains active as an educator and mentor. He teaches piano, Hammond organ, improvisation, musicality, stylistic interpretation and ensemble playing, working with both advanced students and professional musicians. He also leads workshops and educational projects focused on blues, soul and jazz. Over the course of his career he has appeared at clubs, concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, performing music ranging from traditional blues and soul to jazz, funk, Americana and contemporary groove-based projects.

Private Lessons

Private lessons and coaching are available for intermediate and advanced musicians looking to deepen their understanding of jazz, blues, soul, groove, and improvisation. While primarily known as a pianist and Hammond organist, Jan Kořínek also plays guitar and bass and has extensive experience coaching singers, saxophone, trumpet, and harmonica players. Sessions focus on ensemble playing, stylistic interpretation, groove, musical communication, and developing a personal artistic voice through practical, real-world musicianship.

Ensemble coaching focuses on the practical skills that transform individual musicians into a cohesive band. For more than six years, Jan Kořínek has led a blues-oriented band workshop, working with rhythm sections, horn players, singers, and soloists on groove, interaction, dynamics, arranging, improvisation, and stage communication. Sessions emphasize listening, musical conversation, stylistic authenticity, and the real-world skills required for successful ensemble performance in blues, soul, jazz, and related roots music styles.
